Getting Over FOMO: The Surprising Power of Choice

Fear of Missing Out, FOMO, has become such a normal part of life that many people don't even question it anymore.

If you've ever wondered how to get over FOMO, you're not alone. The fear of missing out affects millions of people, whether it's social media, relationships, career opportunities, classes, travel, or simply the sense that everyone else is somehow having a better experience than you are. But what if getting over FOMO has less to do with finding the perfect choice and more to do with being willing to choose?

What if the thing creating the fear isn't that you're missing out?

What if it's that you're refusing to choose?

We live in a world that constantly invites comparison.

Someone else is taking the class.

Someone else is going on the trip.

Someone else is building the business.

Someone else is finding love.

Someone else seems to have figured out the secret.

So we scroll.

We compare.

We hesitate.

We keep our options open just a little longer.

And somehow, in trying not to miss out, we often miss our own lives.

What Is FOMO Really?

Most people think FOMO is about opportunities.

I don't.

I think FOMO is often about the fantasy that there is a perfect choice somewhere else that will finally help you get (and stay) happy.

A better class.

A better relationship.

A better business.

A better future.

A better version of you.

Somewhere.

And if only you could find it, then you'd finally be at peace.

The challenge is that peace rarely comes from finding the perfect choice.

It comes from choosing. And that is not somthing outside of you.

Why the Fear of Missing Out Keeps Us Stuck

Many of us have been taught that before we choose, we need certainty.

We need proof.

We need guarantees.

We need to know how everything will turn out.

We need to eliminate every possible wrong answer before we take a step.

Yet creation doesn't work that way.

The greatest adventures, businesses, friendships, relationships, and futures are often built one choice at a time—with no guarantee of how or when it will show up. It is your willingness to keep choosing that allows it to actualize.

FOMO thrives in indecision.

It grows stronger the longer we stand on the sidelines trying to calculate the perfect future.

And here's the funny thing: the more options you have available, the easier it can be to become paralyzed by them.

Not because there aren't enough possibilities.

Because there are too many.

There's No FOMO When You Choose

I've noticed something interesting over the years.

When I truly choose something, the noise disappears.

When I choose a class because it lights me up, I don't spend my time worrying about the five other classes happening that weekend.

When I choose a project, I stop obsessing about all the projects I could have chosen instead.

When I choose an adventure, a creation, a relationship, or even a quiet evening at home, there is a peace that becomes available.

Not because it was the right choice.

Not because I suddenly know the future.

Not because I have certainty.

But because I chose.

Choice has a way of creating a reality that indecision never can.

The Connection Between FOMO and Decision Paralysis

One of the biggest contributors to FOMO is the fear of making the wrong choice.

What if this isn't it?

What if something better comes along?

What if I regret it?

What if everyone else knows something I don't?

So we wait.

And wait.

And wait.

Yet while we're procrastinating (headtripping) on making the wrong choice, we're also avoiding creating anything at all. Except that that is still creating something, it just might not be what we'd like.

What if you didn't need to make the perfect choice?

What if you only needed to make your next choice?

The people I know who create the most in the world aren't necessarily the people who always choose correctly.

They're the people who keep choosing.

They choose.

They learn.

They create.

They adjust.

And then they choose again.

One thing Simone Milasas invited me in class was to enjoy the choices that I'd made. What if oyu could truly enjoy every choice you made? Becuase you can always choose again from there.

Why Choice Creates Awareness

One of the greatest gifts Access Consciousness has given me is the awareness that choice creates awareness—not the other way around.

Most of us have been taught the opposite.

We think we need enough awareness before we choose.

Enough information. Enough confidence. Enough certainty.

Then we'll choose.

But what if awareness often shows up because you chose?

What if the next step becomes visible only after you take the first one?

What if trusting yourself isn't something you develop before you choose, but something you develop by choosing?

Stop Comparing and Start Creating

Comparison is one of the quickest ways to generate FOMO.

The moment you start measuring your life against someone else's, you stop being present with what is actually available for you.

Your path isn't their path.

Your choices aren't their choices.

Your future isn't their future.

What if your job isn't to keep up with everyone else?

What if your job is to create the life that works for you?

The irony is that getting over FOMO isn't about finding the perfect opportunity. It's about trusting yourself enough to choose, create, and keep choosing as your awareness grows.

Freedom From FOMO

And if you choose something and later discover it's not what you desire?

Choose again. What if every choice you've made gives you awareness that can help you to create the life you've always wanted?

That's the beauty of it.

You're never trapped by choice.

You're only limited by the belief that you only get one.

Every choice creates awareness.

Every choice creates possibilities.

Every choice opens doors that could never have existed before you chose.

So the next time you find yourself wondering if you're missing out, perhaps a different question is available:

What choice am I refusing to make that would eliminate the fear of missing out?

And if you chose it today, what might become possible that you can't currently see?

What if the freedom you've been looking for isn't on the other side of the perfect decision?

What if it's on the other side of choice itself?

Because perhaps the greatest secret to getting over FOMO is discovering that there's no FOMO when you choose.
