This Is Called Acoustical Awareness… and Your Animals Have It (Truth is, so do you.)

This Is Called Acoustical Awareness… and Your Animals Have It (Truth is, so do you.)

There’s something your animals are aware of long before you ever hear it.

Before the storm rolls in.

Before a branch cracks in the woods.

Before another animal steps onto the land.

They know.

Not because they’re “on alert” in the way we’ve been taught to think about it…but because they are constantly receiving.

Sound, yes.

But also Vibration.

Movement.

Energy.

And something else we don’t often acknowledge…

They’re receiving what hasn’t even shown up yet.

This is often referred to as acoustical awareness—the ability to perceive far beyond what’s obvious, far beyond what’s loud enough to register as sound in the way we define it.

And if you live with animals—on a homestead, a farm, or even just in close proximity—you’ve seen it.

The way the chickens suddenly go still and head for cover before the hawk shows up in the sky.

The way a horse lifts its head and looks toward something you can’t yet perceive and then moves closer to the barn. The dog that sits by the door knowing that someone is coming long before the car turns into the driveway.

It’s easy to say, “Their hearing is just better than ours.”

And sure… in some ways, that’s true.

But that’s not the whole story.

It’s Not Just Hearing

What if acoustical awareness isn’t actually about ears?

What if it’s about a willingness to receive everything that’s occurring even in the future… without filtering it, without dismissing it, without needing it to make logical sense first?

Animals don’t sit there and decide whether something is real enough to notice.

They don’t second-guess what they perceive.

They don’t override awareness with conclusion.

They don’t wait for proof.

They receive—and then they respond.

Even when what they’re receiving hasn’t occurred yet.

example

Did you know that rabbits won't breed "well" when there is going to be.a drought? They know that stressed times are coming and they respond accordingly.

Are you willing to be that aware?

Where Did We Lose That?

Because here’s the part we don’t often consider:

You had that too.

Not as something you needed to develop…but as something that was simply there.

A kind of awareness that didn’t function in a straight line of past → present → future…but something more fluid.

And then, over time, you were taught to ignore it.

To focus on what’s visible.

To trust what can be explained.

To dismiss what doesn’t immediately “make sense.”

So now, instead of perceiving first and interpreting later…most people only acknowledge what they can already explain.

Everything else gets filtered out.

The Subtle Things You Notice (and Then Dismiss)

Have you ever had a moment where:

  • You suddenly looked up… for no clear reason

  • You felt something shift in the space before anything actually happened

  • You “knew” something was off with an animal before there were any signs

  • You heard something… not exactly as a sound, but as an awareness

And then immediately thought, “That’s nothing.”

That’s the moment.

The moment where awareness shows up—and then gets shut down.

Living With Animals Changes the Conversation

When you live with animals, this becomes even more obvious.

Because the animals are constantly showing you what’s possible.

They’re aware of weather patterns before they arrive.

They respond to changes in the land before you see them.

They pick up on your state—your stress, your presence, your distraction—without a single word.

And often… they’re responding to something that hasn’t fully shown up yet.

And if you’re willing to notice, you start to realize:

There’s a whole layer of communication happening all the time.

Not loud.Not dramatic.But constant.

What If You’re Not “Missing It”?

Most people assume that if they can’t clearly perceive what animals are aware of, then they must not have the ability.

But what if that’s not true?

What if you are perceiving…and just not acknowledging it?

What if acoustical awareness isn’t something animals have that you don’t—but something they never learned to turn off?

A Different Way of Listening

This isn’t about trying harder.

It’s not about straining to hear something subtle or developing a new skill.

It’s about relaxing enough to notice what’s already there.

To catch those moments before the mind explains them away.To trust the initial awareness—even if it doesn’t come with answers. To be present with your animals without needing to define everything.

Because the more you’re willing to be with that…the more it becomes available.

An Invitation

If you live with animals, you’re already in this conversation.

Whether you’ve acknowledged it or not.

And if there’s even a sense that there might be more going on than you’ve been taught… there probably is.

And in the meantime…

What are you already aware of that you’ve been calling “nothing”? Are are you willing to look at that now?
